Working Conditions

Electricalians work mostly on construction jobs, such rewiring and upgrading buildings, or in renovations. They may be required to bend or sit in tight spaces to connect wires.

They must also follow safety precautions such as keeping safe distance from livewires and using specialized equipment to protect themselves.

Many people start out as apprentices and work for four to 5 years under the watchful eye of an experienced electrician to learn the trade. They learn to read and install wiring, as well as test connections, during their apprenticeship. They also study electricity standards and the National Electrical Code.

After they have completed their apprenticeship they might go on to become a master, or journeyman, electrician. They work in the trade for 7-10 years, passing an exam that demonstrates their superior knowledge about the National Electrical Code.

They must be licensed in each State or Province where they work. They must be informed about the latest National Electrical Code standards and attend seminars to upgrade their knowledge.

The average electrician salary is $35,000. This is a low-skilled entry-level salary. It can however rise depending on how experienced and skilled the person is.

A 4- to 5-year apprenticeship is the best method to start your career as an electrician. An apprenticeship program can either be unionized or not. It includes classroom instruction and on the job training. Although you can get a job in an apprenticeship without a college education, it is recommended that you have a highschool diploma.

An electrician's career is dependent on staying current with the latest technology, safety standards, codes, and other information. They can do this by completing manufacturer-specific courses, continuing education programs and safety training.

How to become electrician

Aspiring electricians will need at least a high school diploma (or equivalent) and some vocational training. An alternative option is to obtain an associate degree or technical certificate program in electric construction, or in a related field, from a technical school.

After finishing their training, an electrician can either work as an independent contractor or as an employee for a contractor. They can work a regular 40-hour job or work irregularly depending on the area they specialize in.
